Kitsap DRC Board Member Derry Lyons shares why he nominated the Dispute Resolution Center for the BECU People Helping People Award

Overview of Kitsap Dispute Resolution Center

  • Founded in 1990, Kitsap DRC is one of 21 dispute resolution centers in WA state
  • Mediations are the cornerstone of the DRC work. Averaging about 175 mediations (cases_ per year with a 75% success rate reaching an agreement.
  • The work is done with a small, dedicated staff and an army of volunteers who help their neighbors with mediation and training services. There are about 75 active mediators on the roster.

How We Serve

  • Over 1500 people a year directly served in mediation (not including children in parenting plans, etc.)
  • There is a $15 intake fee to begin the process
  • Cost: $43- $610 per session, averaging $300/person/session

In 2023

  • 563 cases created (368 were community – parenting plans, neighbors, etc.)
  • 176 went to mediation, of which 135 reached agreement (75%!)
    • 65% are community (parenting plans, neighbor disputes, dissolutions)
    • 20% youth
    • 9% small claims
    • 3% foreclosure
    • 2% multi-party (neighborhood associations, etc.)
  • 28 Trainings on conflict resolution skills for a total of about 500 people
  • About 12 Staff – some full some part time (Mediation – 5, Training – 3, Admin – 3)
